Workshop report

The workshop was fun! We spoke for 20 minutes about the options with a mailing list: what to do and why, the various options.

Then we focused on mailman - I showed everyone how to install a new mailing list (the geeky way), and then showed people how to set up a simple mailman mailing list.

What was good

  • Laura; Good introduction and run through of the various technologies for setting up a mailing list. Clear, concise run through from the initial set up to how one can control and manage members/privacy options and attachments etc
    • I liked this introduction too, it gave a clear overview for our learning --Heather 18:19, 30 January 2008 (CET)
  • Seeing the overview of how to set up a mailing list - while the other stuff on setting up options and such can be self-explanitory (if a bit confusing), it was helpful to see this to understand mailing lists better, even if I'll never necessarily set one up myself--Heather 18:12, 30 January 2008 (CET)

What could have been better

  • Going through the options and such might have been better to do from a 'day-to-day' P.O.V. rather than just by going through the web interface - i.e. approached along the lines of my question at the end about what a mailing list administrator would have to do from day to day. Might have made it less abstract and make more sense for people who aren't familiar with mailing lists --Heather 18:17, 30 January 2008 (CET)

The most useful bit of information was

Laura; Observing how the list is set up, explaining aliases etc and the run through of options on the administrative interface

  • As above; seeing how the mailing list was set up on a server.
